    If I get an apollo for recording jazz guitar only (clean guitar) what plugins do you recommend? I will plug the guitar straight to the guitar input on the front of the interface

      Eeeeehhhhhhhhh. I mean, for jazz, I’d recommend amplitube 5 max. Their clean tones are wayyyy better than the UAD amp sim clean tones. Just being honest. Now the Apollo interface is an amazing interface still. But just saying.

    Hey Steve, great video. Are you still using Luna or did you switch back to logic? Anything you miss from logic if your still in luna? Ive been going back and fourth between logic and luna but I think im going to stay fully in luna now.

    • @TheSteveKinney
      @TheSteveKinney 2 дні тому

      I will never. Ever. Go back to logic. I hate it in almost every regard. Only feature I miss is the external hardware / I/O plugin support, I’m sure that’s coming to Luna, but when is the bigger question. Logic is just soooo hard to work in, IMHO. Id buy a full license of pro tools HDX and an accel card ($6000 investment 😂 ) before I consider going back to logic.

      @@TheSteveKinney 😂 I feel u. I’m very disappointed in Logic Pro 11. I thought it would be a major update fixing so many things but it didn’t. After using Luna logic feels archaic and kind of clunky. Luna feels so fresh and full of life with the constant updates it gets.

    • @TheSteveKinney
      @TheSteveKinney 2 дні тому

      @@iamvelour my ONLY downside is that it’s SUPER clear at this point that UA is almost exclusively focused on trying to pigeon hole everyone into their software ecosystem - which is why the hardware insert thing is so painful to me. The ironic part is that it’s almost making their own hardware (1176, La2a) pointless to buy… you can tie them into their OWN recording system lol 🤦🏻‍♂️ … are they telling us we don’t need to buy their hardware? I get it, things take time… but aye.

    • @iamvelour
      @iamvelour 2 дні тому

      @@TheSteveKinney I thought about that too. Seems like being that they do hardware emulation they don’t see the need to use hardware inserts in Luna. I’m sure it’s gotta be coming though especially if they ever want Luna to really compete with protools. It’s been like 4 years though and I know things take time but I feel like that should have been a day one feature. I would also like logic comping and protools playlisting.

    • @TheSteveKinney
      @TheSteveKinney 2 дні тому

      @@iamvelour hmmmmm. Pro tools playlisting on a track is basically versions in Luna. Now I personally don’t like logics comping. It locks me into looking rather than listening. But that’s just me. And yeah - hardware inserts HAS to be there… should have been day 1. But I’m starting to think there is some sort of limitation with the Apollos as they are to integrate hardware inserts… or again, they are purposefully not including it, so people buy their plugins. Which IMO is a bullshit business practice lol The plugins are good enough that they don’t need any sort of forced buying mechanic… which leads me to believe that their leadership has hired the wrong people who don’t know their own customers. It’s been a strange few years for UA. that’s for sure.

    Steve do you have a method for using MetricAB or another reference plugin in Luna? I know in Studio One you can set up an alternate output that doesn't pass through the Main Mix bus, is this doable without UAD hardware?

    • @TheSteveKinney
      @TheSteveKinney 5 днів тому

      Metric a/b should be able to load into Luna. It’s just a plugin, yeah? Anyways, all you’d have to do - is create a new bus or track and route it to monitor L&R. That would still go out your main speaker outs - but would be outside of your mix bus.

    when I do Duplicate Session, I have no idea where the project file goes. I would like to make a complete back up of projects before I monkey it up. Is Duplicate sort of like Save As? thanks

    • @TheSteveKinney
      @TheSteveKinney 6 днів тому

      there are truly two ways of doing that - so firstly - the duplicated session file saves in the original files same enclosing folder. Which you should always be defining upon session creation. Secondly, inside of the luna's project folder - they have a thing called "versions" which allow you to create completely separate iteration of the project without having to double the project files themselves on your hard drive. either way works. but just food for thought.

    • @PTFWWDB
      @PTFWWDB 6 днів тому

      @@TheSteveKinney yes I've been using versions but sometimes I just want a complete back up file when things get messy and something gets screwed up as I'm learning. You can still create cue mixes, and utilize luna like a daw with another interface - However, you'd still be open to latency, just like any other daw at that point. UA's marketing team needs to either have a come to Jesus meeting or be fired at this point lol there are so many asterisks and fine print that is misunderstood due to the marketing team. lol Now you mention gig performer... 1. define that.. 2. what about it? that's so vague that I'm not sure where you might be going with the question. A lot of people keep their superior drummer libraries on drives like this. I had some buffer underruns when I kept ezdrummer on one of my drives. It would be cool If I could mute the click th with my Feet in the cute mix. when we play we have no engineer and we play to a click but sometimes at the end of a song we go into a Retardando and it's very annoying to hear the click :) any help would be greatly appreciated :) Eido

    • @TheSteveKinney
      @TheSteveKinney 22 дні тому

      Technically, no. Practically, yes. Let me explain. First, the only thing that you can keyboard shortcut, is something that is in the menu, or built in as a keyboard shortcut by the devs already. So that’s your first roadblock and the technical no… since there is no menu command nor has that function been assigned by the devs. However, the practical way of doing this is to: 1. Assign the alt button on your Apollo to the talkback. This is great for the built in functionality of the Apollo. If that’s not acceptable… the second practical way of doing it is- is to just get a mic, assign it an input channel in your session, and leave it up in the control room and smash it with compression. Then on the uf8 you can simple press the cut/mute button on that channel on and off when you wanna talk back. This is the old school method that they used back in the day before console manufacturers started building that functionality natively into the consoles. Hopefully this all makes sense. Cheers!

    What did you do with the antenna from the Sennheiser EW-500 (the microphone receiver)? The way I understand it, it's not possible to connect that to a combiner such as the RF Venue Combine 4 which you use with the IEM transmitter. This is confusing me :/

    • @TheSteveKinney
      @TheSteveKinney 22 дні тому

      That antenna is certainly different. It’s a receiver. The mic itself is a transmitter. Whereas the IEM packs are the receivers. The only think I did use was the power supply from the combiner just for simplicity in the rack. That particular unit has an AMAZING built in antenna. It can scan for open channels super easily; never once ran into any sort of trouble with it yet. The iem’s themselves, the xsw’s - they sound great and work awesome with the combiner. Don’t have any issues there. I just wish I got a better unit so scanning for open channels was easier… that’s a manual process so if your short on time.. that would be a pain. I haven’t run into an issue with not having an open channel, but still, lol manually looking is a bit tedious. Hopefully this helps ya out!

    • @alannoruspur5315
      @alannoruspur5315 21 день тому

      @@TheSteveKinney Thanks for the reply! That's a bit strange. I could not find any information about an internal antenna in the microphone receiver. According to the manufacturer's website, the Sennheiser EW-100/300/500 Microphone Receiver is a True Diversity system that uses two antennas on the back and should not be connected to a combiner. I believe you when you say that it's working for you, however technically speaking, I don't understand how it could work in case you aren't using any of the two small antennas that came with the unit and have the receiver connected to a combiner (which you aren't supposed to do, even just to power it up). Please don't get me wrong, I'm not trying to tell you what you are supposed to do. I just wish it would be possible to build a rack with both IEM transmitters and instrument receivers but the only way that's possible is if you use external antennas which are spaced apart. Otherwise you run the risk of intermodulation and instability of both systems.

    • @TheSteveKinney
      @TheSteveKinney 21 день тому

      @@alannoruspur5315 I’m not sure if I was clear, so I apologize - I’m only connecting the microphones receiver to the combiners power supply rather than using the power brick it came with. That’s all. I’m definitely not using the antenna from the combiner because that wouldn’t work. I’m using the two built in antennas that attach to the back of the rack unit. And it works flawlessly. When setting up, the first thing I do is power everything up and let the mic unit scan for open frequencies. Then I move on to the other wireless units. Not once have I had issues. But yeah / the only thing using the paddle antenna is the wireless in ears. Again, mic is using its built in antennas.

Also you can push the plugins much more on Luna. Am I right?

      Eeeehhhhh. There’s likely some perception happening here. Digital audio is digital audio. 0dbFs is 0dbFs. Regardless if your on pro tools, logic, Luna … However, I have noticed over the years how working in different daws, the way their meters readout leads to me setting gain structure differently - and mixing differently. So that is a thing. Then finally, if you’re using their Luna extensions, like tape and summing - both of those introduce harmonic distortion. Harmonic distortion adds tons of loudness. By 1. Adding more harmonics and overtones, and two, clipping off the peaks of your signal. Now … overdone and this is wildly obvious distortion.. tastefully done and you get a little extra loudness and the “sound of analogue” that is so famous. Hopefully that all makes sense. Cheers.

      @@TheSteveKinney thank you. It makes perfect sense. However, If I try to add the same amount of distortion in both platform, in Luna it may sound a lot more clean and clear whereas in logic sound dirty and a little ugly to my taste. That's my opinion. What do you think? By the way, the summing in Luna is fantastic

      @@ian20n yeah, I mean, I think the metering thing is what is kind of helping you get to where you are enjoying it. In logic, the meters have a weird non linear way of depicting levels, I don’t and never liked it. I get better mixes out of PT and Luna for sure. And the summing thing is cool. I like that it’s doing a little something and pushing my sound in a direction but not so colored that I have to think about it. It’s literally like working on a console. It’s almost like you don’t know it’s there until you have 50 tracks and you flip it off.

      @@TheSteveKinney Thank you. That's it. This comment was all I need. You're right, logic meter is none linear and I also don't like it. Thank you so much again for taking the time to respond back. I like your channel s lot

    you have as much external hardware as latency compensation works with luna

      I’m sorry, I don’t know that I understand. But - there is no external hardware delay compensation at this point.
